I started my walk in the Upper Westside at the Ankon Kern Gallery,
where I did feel the art had interesting shapes, but poor execution. If the choice is to use cheap materials, my stance is that it must
transcend them.
I journeyed down to Harpers where I was in awe at the world Hyegyeong created. The viewer becomes an anthropologist, observing and interpreting the customs, behaviors, and activities within the artist’s colorful constructed society. The use of color transforms familiar sights into fantastical, dreamlike scenes, enhanced by the occasional presence of mythical creatures and the cohesive portrayal of androgynous figures.
Next door at Harpers, I saw Irene Noren’s first solo show. The Spanish artist continued my dreamlike state, though within a much calmer world. What especially drew me into the exhibition was her use of texture, which I felt contributed to the calmness and purity of the women she portrays. Her works seem to express the sensation of living within the body more than the body’s outward form as viewed by the observer. I was inspired by the flat motion that reminded me that life still exists even in the stillness.
I was on mile 3 at this point, I stopped at Haraz and got a slice of pizza and admired the bird collage at the local park before continuing my art journey.
TEXTURE TEXTURE TEXTURE.
Jess Allen’s layered textures draw the viewer directly into the space of the work. The paintings create the feeling of being a stranger within someone else’s home; the shadows cast across the walls at times feel as though they belong to the viewer, as if you are quietly moving through a silent building.
In my own work, I try to prioritize texture as apart of the viewers experience and I felt inspired by Allen's methods.
My personal favorite of the evening was Nicodim Gallery’s presentation of Rae Klein. These larger-than-life paintings had a carefree sense of surrealism that felt refreshing and unrestrained. A great reminder that artists are allowed to distort reality and that a lot can be achieved in broad motions and confidence strokes. There was a freedom in the paintings that felt encouraging, especially as another artist viewing the show.
I am adding one of her works to my dream to own list.
It was a great conclusion to an art walk that ended at 7.5!, closing the night with work that felt imaginative, energetic, and memorable.
